So my friend just moved into her lovely apartment and had covered the basics in terms of furniture but she wanted a little something else, a little color suggestion. I was writing the following email to her and thought.. why not share these tips with everyone? These simple and affordable tips can be applied to your own apartment.

Hey patti.

I was procrastinating and thinking that maybe you could try this out for size.
I did a sketch of what I think you could do with ur place. I really think orange and a dark purple will go really great with your dark brown floors.

1. Orange themed canvas paintings..

maybe with a hint a green, yellow, or dark purple. 3 in a row is more hip and modern then one big one which might be hard to find/carry.

2. Throw a simple inexpensive blanket over your sofa,

this will do two things: color your room and also keep a guest warm.

3. A color splash rug!

You might be timid about the rug but this will really brighten your room and spirits. Once you have all the furniture on top of it, it won’t seem so loud. It’ll also help with the coffee table that you said didn’t match before. And don’t worry it’ll still feel spacious, like you like it.

4. Use your books as decoration.

I would move the books you have on your island and stack them underneath your coffee table in a decorative way. The fun colors on the book covers will make a interesting display when guests are looking through your glass table top. Also that will free up your island so you can have a little bar table and stools. This ones a quirky example from wildtyping.

5. Have your artistic friend paint something on your wall!

..haha. If you pay for materials and such, i’d gladly go over there and paint a mural on you wall…but during winter break. I’m thinking orange flowers with a subtle classical swirly floral pattern in the back. Like so..
